Applying to University

Commonly asked questions

When should I apply to University/my son or daughter apply to University?

You should start thinking about what you want to study at the start of Year 10. If you have not started thinking about University at the start of Year 10, that is not a problem. Most students start thinking about the University they want to apply to at the end of Year 12. We recommend starting to think about what you want to do as early as possible. This is so you can adequately research your career path, examine the Universities that interest you, visit certain Universities to gain a feel of these institutions and whether you would like studying there and approaching students at these Universities to ask them about their experience.

At the start of Year 10, you should consider what subjects you enjoy and excel at and what you would like to do in the future. You should think about whether you can secure work experience in a certain field- such as medicine, law, accounting, finance, banking, marketing, consulting etc.

Don't worry if you are unable to gain experience at this stage. You may be able to learn more about what it is like working in banking or law by doing a virtual work experience program on Forage (https://www.theforage.com/).

After thinking about what you want to do and what you are good at, we recommend working hard to get the highest possible grades at GCSE/IGCSE in order for you to prepare yourself for A levels. Universities do look at GCSE/IGCSE results.

If you  are starting to prepare an application in Year 12 with a view to entering University after completing Year 13, we recommend you carefully examine your strengths and ambitions, look to do some work experience (even if it is virtual) and do some extra reading on the weekends about the subject you are most passionate about. If you were writing a persuasive letter to a University admissions officer attempting to convince them about why they should give you a place at their University, what would you write? How can you convey your strengths and passion for the topic? What have you done outside of college/school to demonstrate your understanding and passion for this subject?

You will need a personal statement and a reference from a teacher, academic head or somebody in a position of responsibility to support your UCAS application. Our exam center can help you with your application from proofreading and redrafting your personal statement to interview preparation, providing a reference, and submitting the application on your behalf.
